The End of the Quest

Sir Frank Dicksee is one of my favorite painters, and his work “The End of the Quest” is one of my favorite paintings. It truly is worth a thousand words, and more! The faces of the man and woman seem to hint at a long and beautiful love story that I, for one, would greatly wish to hear. Questions keep popping up in my head… Who is this man? What terrible trials of physical and spiritual endurance can he have suffered through, to lend him such an air of calm, quiet strength? And who is she? How long has she been waiting there? I wonder…
