Tagged for a Book Meme
Thursday, Jun 12th, 2008 by Janna

Shannon from “A Maiden’s Musings” (one of my very favorite blogs, by the way) has “tagged” me, inviting me to participate in a book meme. I’ve never been tagged before, so this will be a new experience — and a pleasant one, considering the subject matter!
Who is your all-time favorite author and why?
“All-time” seems to point to an author who has stood the test of years and years of reading and re-reading; one whom you never tire of. Say you are given five minutes to grab a book off the shelf and get in the car for a long road trip. Which author comes first to mind? For myself, I’d have to say C. S. Lewis. It’s his uncanny vision into the deceitful hearts of us humans; his knowledge of what’s absurd — lovably absurd — about mankind; and, above all, the deep feeling of Joy, a longing for something that can never be… In this world.
Who was your first favorite author and why? Do you still consider him/her to be among your favorites?
Grandma Berge kept a tattered set of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books in the guest bedroom, and, when I was eight or ten or so, I began reading them for myself. I seem to recall feeling ridiculously proud to be reading these “big kid” books. And I loved the stories! Laura Wilder’s wonderfully simple writing style draws you in and holds your attention — even when your age is still measured in single digits! Is she still among my favorites? Well… She’d make the “long list”. ![]()
Who is the most recent addition to your list of favorite authors, and why?
About two years ago, my friend Amanda introduced me to an author by the name of Constance Savery. Her book, Enemy Brothers, a tale set in Britain during the early years of World War II, has since become one of my very favorites. It’s a children’s book, in the same way the Narnia books are children’s books; that is, it’s full of timeless truths, written out strong and clear for everyone to understand.
If someone asked you who your favorite authors were right now, which authors would first pop out of your mouth?
C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Frank Peretti, and Constance Savery.

Meme: an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.

Hi Janna,
I have been enjoying reading your blog for a while now, thanks for the time and effort you put into it! It’s very encouraging. I am interested in your answer to the question about who your favorite authors are, especially C.S Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien. As a sister in Christ with your best interest in mind, I ask if you would read the this write up on C.S Lewis. It can be found here.

I do not necessarily agree with everything this man believes doctrinally. However this paper an Narnia changed my life. Thanks and may God bless you more and more each day as you strive to follow Him!
Lauren
Hello, Lauren! Thank you so much for your kind comments. If you’re encouraged, I’m encouraged, too.
While I disagree with many of C. S. Lewis’s beliefs and opinions, I still enjoy his writing very much. The same holds true for every single one of my “favorite authors”. We must be very careful not to let these fallible human writers unduly influence our thinking. Basing my entire world-view on the writings of C. S. Lewis or Ken Ham or A. W. Tozer would be settling for second-best. Our knowledge of the Truth must come first and foremost from the inspired Word of God.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2
Hi Janna! Thanks for tagging me…I posted my answers on my blog!
Thankyou for tagging me, Janna! I’ve posted my entry on my blog now! I enjoyed it very much!
Many children’s books (and I’m including those written for young adults) have something timeless and truthful and beautiful in them. I’d also rate many of my favourites from this genre.
Oh, the Laura Ingalls Wilder books were part of my growing up, too! I re-read one a few years ago, and was reveling in the descriptions Laura writes of their clothing — invaluable to costume historians! I’ll have to look up Constance Savery; I’m unfamiliar with her.
Thanks for “playing,” Janna! Of course, I already knew from your goodreads “bookshelf” that we had similar tastes in books
Yours in Christ,
Shannon
Thanks for tagging me Janna, that was fun!
Yeah thanks for tagging me to…I just finished mine! Life is going pretty well, I’m working…trying to save up money for college next semester. I went on a mission’s trip to Papua New Guinea this spring, and really believe God has called me there as a full-time Bible teacher, so now everything in my life is getting honed in for that goal. Anyway, so what’s going on over in Minn?
