Gone Fishing
Tuesday, Jun 17th, 2008 by Janna

Last Friday evening, after having supper with Grandma and Justin and Audra, Dad proposed hooking up the pontoon and heading out to Big Wolf Lake for a relaxing evening of fishing. Audra took a look out the window and voiced her doubts about the weather. Thunderstorms had been popping up all day, and the sky was still dotted with dark, ragged clouds. Dad was more optimistic; he wanted to go fishing. He had us gather up all the rain gear we own (and a tarp), and, thus prepared for any adventures that might befall us, we set out to hunt some walleye.

Beautiful Big Wolf Lake, just a couple of miles from our house. See the bit of rainbow near the horizon?
… … …

The ol’ pontoon isn’t exactly a speed demon, but it’ll go fast enough to mess up your hair.
… … …

Waiting patiently for a walleye bite….
… … …

Audra caught one! Not exactly a prize-winner for size, but it’s perfect for eating.
… … …

Grandma had caught a walleye, too, but she prefers perch for eating, so this one’s a keeper.
… … …

Dad thought for sure he had a walleye on the hook. He reeled in and it was nothing but a scroungy rock-bass, no good for eating, and basically an all-around nuisance to walleye hunters.
Besides the rock-bass, Dad caught at least two real walleyes, and an unknown number of perch and northern pike.
… … …

As we fished, we watched clouds heavy with rain pass west of us. The raincoats and ponchos and tarp proved unnecessary, thankfully. The evening sky was beautiful, the sinking sun piercing through the clouds… It was time to go home, fillet our fresh catch, and have a bowl of ice-cream — as a reward for all the hard work we’d been doing, fishing.
P.s. These photos were all taken by my sister, Amanda.

Janna, your family does so many unusual things together and I enjoy
hearing about them. The fishing trip looks great and am impressed
with grandma and her fishing skills. When I first found your blog I went
back and read (haven’t finished all) and the Maple Syrup blogs are just
priceless. They are all so family oriented and it is so refreshing to see.
Enjoy having such a “bunch” around you and don’t take it for granted.
It is one of God’s gifts and I am sure that you realize that.
Thanks for keeping me entertained!
Yours in Christ,
Ms. Dale
Fun post Janna! I love the picture of Grandma! It looks like you had a great time! How many fish did you end up with?
What fun! And magical evening light.
Hi, Karen! You know, I’m not sure how many fish we caught, in all. At least enough for one meal! Lately, we’ve been trying out a new way to prepare fish — it’s called “blackening”; you coat the fish in a spice mix and cook them quickly over very high heat. It’s a delicious change from our traditional breaded-and-deep-fried method.
Mmm! Sounds tasty! I have fixed fish that way too…yummy! What spices did you use?
We used a prepared blackening spice mix, which we bought at Lueken’s. I can’t remember what the brand name is… But there’s a picture of a man in a chef’s hat on the front of the box!
Wow! I’ve never had any luck when we would try to fish….but it looks like you did!
It also looks like you and your family had a great time.
