Usually considered a special-occasion dessert, Rommegrot, a rich, creamy wheat porridge, makes a delicious, satisfying breakfast, perfect for a chilly November morning. If you’re getting a little tired of oatmeal, give this a try! Oh, but before you look at the recipe, please read the following warning…
WARNING:
Do not be alarmed by the three sticks of [...]

I’d been wanting to make bread pudding for a long time. My dear family members were not all that keen on the idea, however. Were they haunted by ghosts of puddings past? Who knows. But I was in a determined, oh-try-it-you’ll-like-it sort of mood, so I collected my ingredients (And my thoughts? Well…) and set [...]

As members of the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers (LIRPF), our duties include the baking of two pies to sell at the annual threshing show, coming right up this weekend. Today was the pie-baking day, and the outcome was one Dutch apple and one pecan. Now the pecan… Oh, the pecan! The recipe, handed down [...]

Look what we had for supper yesterday evening! Amanda made a double-batch of shortcakes to go with our freshly-picked strawberries, while Erica made a bowl of cream cheese whipped cream to glop on top. To complete the red-white-and-blue triumvirate we added some store-bought blueberries. Don’t all the ingredients look delicious, layered together to create [...]

I had it all planned out this morning. We’d have waffles for breakfast and I’d take some absolutely stunning photos of them for my blog post. Then I remembered that we’re entirely out of butter. What a thing to be out of! We’ve had pounds and pounds of it in the freezer for so long, [...]

The flavors of warm, freshly-baked banana nut bread are truly comforting on a chilly winter’s morning. However, the preparation and baking time (upwards of an hour!) have kept me from attempting such a thing on a weekday, when breakfast is always served before seven-thirty (Get up at six to make banana bread? No way.). Here’s [...]

It’s rather a cruel irony of life — the fact that, though I am on a very strict low-carb diet, I derive no small amount of satisfaction and pleasure from the art of baking. Flour, that indispensable ingredient in bread, cakes and cookies, is a big no-no for those trying to cut down on carbohydrate [...]

I made a double batch of pillowy-soft, delicious-smelling Whole Wheat Onion Buns today. I’ll bet they’d be just perfect for hamburgers, or most any kind of sandwich a person could think of. I’m thinking of a big, mouthwatering roast beef sandwich, with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, and sauteed mushrooms and green peppers.
This recipe [...]

Yesterday afternoon, just after Dad arrived home from work, a much-appreciated rainshower settled the dust on the dirt roads–perfect weather for a four-wheeler ride! After the supper clean-up, we headed out. Can you believe we almost forgot to bring buckets for gathering wild blueberries? Here in Minnesota, July is the month the delicious pea-sized berries [...]
